Carbon Steel Gravers
Carbon steel gravers are economically priced. They cut precisely when new, but don't retain their sharpness as long as other steel alloys, making them good for occasional use.

HSS Gravers
High Speed Steel gravers strike a good balance between cost and durability. They maintain their hardness better than standard carbon steel gravers but cost less than carbide.

Carbide Steel Gravers
Carbide gravers maintain their sharpness longer than any other steel. Carbide steel is more brittle than either carbon steel or high speed steel and is more likely to chip if mishandled. Preferred by experienced engravers.
